Behind Tavolara: unusual boat trips among rocks, caves and islets

Beyond Tavolara: the hidden coast

In short: Behind Tavolara lies a world of small bays, rocks and islets that can only be reached by sea.

The Tavolara – Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area is not just the main island: behind it lies a mosaic of cliffs and coves ideal for boat or dinghy trips.

This area, rich in history and breathtaking landscapes, has been a refuge for fishermen and a natural landing place for local boats for centuries. The wind-shaped granite rocks and Mediterranean vegetation reveal the ancient soul of the island and its sea.

Starting from Porto Taverna or Porto San Paolo, you can explore little-known corners of the sea, including small sandy bays, isolated rocks and stretches of coastline where time seems to have stood still.

The natural pools of Molara

In short: Crystal clear water, sandy seabed and absolute tranquillity.

The pools of Molara are turquoise lagoons created by the contrast between sand and rock. In addition to the famous pools, circumnavigating the island reveals beautiful hidden coves, where the sand is very fine and the water takes on shades of emerald and deep blue.

Access is regulated, perfect for those who love snorkelling or underwater photography. They can be reached in a few minutes by boat from Porto Taverna.

The Cavalli rocks and the caves of Capo Ceraso

In short: Small geological and biological wonders to be discovered with a local guide.

The Cavalli rocks offer seabed rich in fish and gorgonians, located a short distance from Molara and easily accessible by dinghy or small boat from Porto Taverna or Porto San Paolo.

A little further north, the caves of Capo Ceraso open up between granite rocks sculpted by the sea, in the area between Punta Ruia and Cala di Finanza. It is advisable to visit them with experienced guides or skippers, to respect the protected areas and because many caves are located in stretches of coastline that are only accessible by sea and in favourable weather conditions.

How to organise an excursion

In short: Departure from Porto Taverna by dinghy or organised daily tours.

Many local operators offer shared or private boat trips, with customised stops, snorkelling and aperitifs on board. Ferries depart hourly from Porto San Paolo to Tavolara, while dinghy trips, boat trips and various dinghy rental services are available for those who wish to explore the coast independently or with a local guide.

Guests staying at our Residence Lu Nibareddu can book excursions directly through reception or local partners.
